How to Know When It Is Time for a Water Heater ReplacementAs with all appliances, at some point, water heaters need replacement.  It’s just tricky to know when exactly they should be repaired or when they need to be replaced.  Water heaters have very few moving parts, so there is not a lot that can go wrong with them, and if something does it can often easily be repaired.  It can be dangerous if you do not replace a water heater when necessary, though, so here are some tell-tale signs to help you be aware when to consider water heater replacement.

  • Water heaters have a life span of 10-13 years.  You can look at the serial code for the manufacturing date or call the manufacturer to find out when yours was installed if you’re not sure.  If your water heater is approaching the 10-year mark, it is a good time to consider water heater replacement because most water heaters manufactured now are more energy efficient and will help you save money on your energy bills.
  • If your water heater springs a leak, this usually can’t be repaired.  The cause of the leak is likely water minerals reacting with the steel, which then causes corrosion.  If this happens, you will need to be ready to look for a water heater replacement.

After you have found your water heater replacement, you should maintain it by flushing out the sediment that builds up at least once a year.  If you are unsure how to do this, then call a professional to help you out.
